Ashoka University: Decoding the Fees structure

Since you’re spending your time reading this blog, you’ve probably set your eyes on Ashoka University. Honestly, great choice! You’re either a passionate individual or you vibe with liberal arts campuses. Whatever the case, the fee structure can be a major factor in the decision making process of prospective students. In this blog, let’s check out the fee structure of the undergraduate liberal arts program, and it’ll hopefully make your college decisions easier.

Books and Classes – Tuition Fees

For Ashoka University’s prestigious undergraduate program, the tuition fee is INR 9,74,000 for first year (AY24-25). Whoa, that’s a lot, isn’t it? This fee structure is definitely on the expensive side. To see what could possibly justify this cost, and why Ashoka University is so hyped up despite the high fees, you can check out this blog. Or, you can just read ahead in this one.

Room and Board – Residence Fees

Next up is the cost of living on campus. The Residence cost is INR 1,91,000 for AY24-25. This cost component includes the following: Room and utilities such as water, electricity (100% backup and air conditioning), pantry and gymnasium. Now, whatever your feelings might be about living in dormitories, the cost is still decent for residence.

Essential Services

Now this is definitely the cherry on top: essential services, including medical insurance and laundry services. And the price for this? A meagre INR 5,400. Another decent amount for these yearly services.

That brings our one-year total for the first year (AY24-25) to INR 11,70,400.

More information about the Fees

Meals: A fixed minimum amount of INR 10,000 per semester will be charged toward meals and dining facilities at the end of each semester (the fixed minimum amount for one year is INR 20,000). Any meals consumed beyond this fixed minimum cost will be charged on a pro-rata basis (the total cost for all meals per day amounts to INR 284) at the end of each semester through the meal coupon system.

The Residence Cost is based on an average stay-duration of nine months a year. Special permissions must be sought if a student seeks to stay on campus during vacation periods.

Services such as books, printing, photocopies, stationery, etc. will be charged on actuals.

Is it Worth it?

Well the fee structure may seem a little ridiculous but to find out about the worthiness of the course, it depends on who you ask. If your dream is to study psychology and other liberal arts, the 11.7 lakh a year price tag may seem worth it. But we are yet to look at another factor: Financial Aid.

So, here’s the thing: if you’re lucky enough to get financial aid, Ashoka University is a stellar option. Even if you don’t qualify, you’re not only investing in your education, you will also be at one of India’s top liberal arts universities. And who knows, maybe when you will become a world-famous journalist or economist in a few years, you’ll look back at the lakhs you spent. And, either way, you would be equipped with the ability of writing cool essays on existentialism.
